Engagement sessions are usually the first time you work with your photographer and most likely had professional photos taken with your fiancé. It’s a super exciting time but also it can leave you feeling overwhelmed or nervous about what to expect or wear. This is completely normal so don’t be stuck, this post is here to make it an easier process.
Engagement Sessions are one of my favourite things about being a wedding photographer because it’s an opportunity for me to get to know the couple (you) and spend some relaxing time together. Of course, also taking some photos.
Since one of the most popular questions I get during the process before the sessions is “what should we wear.” I’ve come up with some tips that can help you decide on what to wear to your engagement session.
BECAUSE WHEN YOU LOOK GREAT, YOU FEEL GREAT. AND WHEN YOU FEEL GREAT, YOU’RE GOING TO LOVE HOW YOUR PICTURES TURN OUT.
Here are Some Tips on What to Wear
Colour is very important! Luckily, there are a few simple guidelines I like to follow: neutral colours, subtle patterns, use of texture, and coordinating but not matching. Neutral colour doesn’t mean no colour, just stick with cool tones (navy, burgundy, emerald, blush, dusty blue, etc). You will thank me later for warning you about avoiding neon colours (bright orange, lime green, hot pink, etc) because they will reflect on your skin giving unwanted colour casts. If you want to add in a pop of colour the best way is with accessories.
My recommendation is also stick to 2 outfits: one casual and one dressy. This will allow us to spend our time taking photos instead of changing outfits. Gents, this means jeans/nice button up and a suit; ladies jeans/nice top and a dress. The most important thing is that you want to feel like yourself and comfortable in the outfits that you choose.
Like I said above, don’t match… coordinate! I remember when I took family photos and everyone wore a white shirt and jeans, way to matchy-matchy for an engagement session. Pairing a solid colour and pattern is a great place to start when coordinating. Avoid pairing too many patterns in one outfit so that it won’t be a distraction in the photos. For the record, I’m not hating on the white shirt and jeans look. Every outfit has its place.
And Couple More Tips:
– Go Fancy! This is such a big moment in your lives so go big! Pull out all the stops and get some gorgeous outfits. Asos always has a variety of outfits and even check out Hirestreet to rent some beautiful dresses. You get two outfits so one can be fancy, and one can be more casual.
-Don’t hesitate to send your ideas for your outfits to your photographer. I love when my couples involve me the process so we can make the shoot the best it can possibility be!
– It’s always a great idea to have your makeup and hair trial on the day of the engagement. A professional will know what photographs best and how to make you look perfect for your session that you will be looking at for years to come.
-Don’t forget to accessorize! Beautiful jewellery and layers will help bring your outfits to the next level. For your man it can be a cool pair of socks, a fun tie, a bowtie, or suspenders, I like it when guys get to have a little fun with their outfits.
-Think of bringing flowers into the shoot. Contact your florist for your wedding and see if they could make a bouquet for your session! I would also be happy to help contacting some florists who might be interested on providing some beautiful flower bouquet.
– Have a great time! This is an exciting time for the two of you and great experience to remember and look back on your journey of creating a beautiful life together.
